Indoor climbing centre Yeovil, wet weather activities with kids Somerset

Tucked away on the Pen Mill trading estate on the outskirts of Yeovil (South Somerset) is an unassuming industrial unit without much fanfare. But within, you’ll find a great physical challenge for kids (and adults, if you’re game to give it a go), on Ready2Climbs colourful and varied climbing walls. Ideal for wet weather days, this indoor activity centre caters for children aged 4years+*, so long as the participant is physically able to climb safely and understand/abide by the strict safety rules.

Climbers can have a go at a wide range of climbing challenges of varying difficulty (though almost all of them surprisingly manageable by my 5 year old!) from rock climbing-style hand and foot grips to rope ladders and a set of tall pipes that require a leap of faith..! Have a go at the timed climb, or try to conquer the 5 metre tight rope/slack line (none of our gang made it past three steps.)

Climbing costs £12.50 per 50 minute session and the beauty of it from a parent’s perspective is that, unlike many other climbing centres, the staff take responsibility for clipping the climbers in to the safety belaying system – a rope that automatically takes the slack while your child climbs then safely lowers them to the ground when they want to come down (or if they lose their grip.) This leaves parents free to spectate without having to run between children to clip and unclip.

From a safety perspective, children wear a fitted harness checked by a member of staff and clear instructions are given to climbers to wait to be clipped on at each wall before they can begin climbing. It felt very safe throughout for our novice climbers and the kids soon got the hang of letting themselves fall back and be lowered down to the ground.

In terms of facilities, Ready2Climb has basic refreshments on sale – cakes, soft drinks and chocolate bars. There are toilets and a viewing area – only refreshments bought from Reception can be consumed on-site. There is limited free parking outside.

We visited as part of a 9th birthday party with 10 children in total – a great way to expel some energy then fill back up again with the party buffet provided!

As well as fun climbing, Ready2Climb offers a low-level bouldering wall for ages 4+ - this is rock climbing but without the ropes, with crash mats below. This is a separate activity to the fun climbing sessions.

Book your session online in advance – *if booking in a 4-year-old, please phone the venue to discuss, proof of age will be required on arrival.
