I was tipped off by a friend that a new café had opened on the outskirts of South Petherton, then drawn in by a series of the most colourful, amazing-looking, wildflower-adorned cakes, salads and wider menu on Farm & Field Café’s fresh new Facebook feed – it was time to test these out for myself!
Signposted from the Lopen roundabout, not far from the South Petherton/A303 roundabout, the access road brings you to Frogmary Green Farm’s visitor entrance and car park. It seems like there’s a lot of development going on at the farm, one aspect being the installation of a brand-new café – a really nice-looking timber and glazing kind of place, with colourful flowers strung across the ceilings, neon signs and even an outdoor woodburner to warm the covered outside seating area!
Now fully up and running as an eat-in venue, visitors have the choice of the light and bright indoor seating or the covered outdoor area, or you can make use of the extensive grounds opposite and take your food away as a picnic. Kids can run free in the grassy amphitheatre or by the lake – ideal to burn off energy after a Farm & Field milkshake!
The café is currently open Wednesday-Sunday for cakes and coffees, and lunches. (See up to date opening hours here.) At the weekends, breakfast is available too (wow, it looks SO good – cooked breakfasts on offer, vegan, carnivore, pancakes, it all looks delicious. I’ll let the images speak for themselves for the menu offerings (obviously these images aren’t mine, they’re far too nice - all the decent images in this article are credited back to the Café).
The lunch menu includes sandwiches (the enormous indulgent type), salads, specials and sides. There isn’t a specific children’s menu but if your children freak out at the sight of a pea shoot in a sandwich they’re happy to adapt their offerings for kids. You can also buy fresh milkshakes, and chips/fries.
On Wednesdays the café opens later for burger night takeaways, and again on Fridays for pizza. I’ve never tried a pizza topped with edible flowers but I’m sure game to give it a try!
In terms of access and facilities, the café is buggy-accessible indoor and out. Baby change facilities are available in the toilets. Access to the grounds is buggy friendly and the grass in the fields is kept mown to allow for easy wheel access. Only point to mention is that the grounds are a trek from the loos in the café building.
This place is set to go from strength the strength, I’ll be returning soon to try some more colourful things off the menu!
